New numbers from the OPP’s Marine Unit show that a vast majority of boaters had Personal Floatation Devices onboard in 2018.
Statistics gathered by both West Parry Sound OPP marine officers and Canadian Coast Guard personnel show that 93 percent of boaters had PFD’s on their vessels but only 28 percent were using them.
That’s seven out of 10 people NOT wearing life-preservers.
Acting OPP Detachment Commander Dominic Lalonde says it can take 30 minutes or more for most adults to become even mildly hypothermic in icy water.
He adds if you find yourself in extremely cold water, do not panic and remember that you have some extra time to make good decisions.
During the summer season this year, the Marine Unit issued 41 Small Vessel Regulation (SVR) charges and arrested four impaired boaters while patrolling area lakes and rivers as well as Georgian Bay.
Lalonde urges everyone to enjoy the fall fishing season and to please wear your lifejacket.
