There’s one week left to get your application in as recruitment continues for volunteer firefighters in Parry Sound.
Applications can only be picked up at the Parry Sound Fire Complex located at 4 Church Street.
When asked why applications weren’t available online, Parry Sound Director of Development & Protective Services and Fire Chief Dave Thompson says it’s important for the applicant to visit the fire station first.
Chief Thompson stresses that applying as a volunteer firefighter is a two-way process.
It’s the first stage of the Fire Department interviewing the applicant and the applicant interviewing the Fire Department to determine if the job is the right fit for both parties.
The Fire Chief says too many times the realities of the job don’t meet the expectations of the applicant. By doing things this way, time is not wasted on false or mismatched expectations or qualifications that don’t meet the demands of the job.
You must be at least 18 years of age to apply and there is no upper age limit, however, Chief Thompson reminds applicants that active fire suppression is physically demanding and should be taken into consideration when applying.
A volunteer firefighter should able to commit 10 to 15 hours a month of their time to routine calls, twice monthly training sessions in addition to specialty training.
Applications must be submitted to the Parry Sound Fire department no later than Friday, November 16th, 2018.
