A 76-year-old man is recovering following a potentially dangerous scene on Highway 400 near Parry Sound.

On Sunday afternoon, West Parry OPP responded to numerous calls from motorists complaining that car was travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway.

Police blocked all southbound lanes of the highway and set up a cruiser with lights flashing along with a tire deflation device in the open lane in an attempt to stop the car.

The driver of the vehicle drove past the officer and ran over the spike strip, puncturing his tires and finally coming to a stop.

The Peterborough man who was reported missing by his family was taken to hospital for medical reasons.

No charges were laid.

Police determined the man had driven approximately 40 kilometres the wrong way on Highway 400 and that they received 29 9-1-1 calls from motorists to alert them of the situation.
