Alert actions by police during a traffic stop lead to a man and a woman facing multiple drugs and weapons charges.

On Wednesday afternoon at about 1:30 pm, North Bay OPP pulled over a vehicle on Highway 11 in Powassan for a traffic violation.

The officers began looking into things further after speaking to the occupants of the car, eventually discovering a loaded handgun and drugs they believed to be cocaine, crack, morphine, and cannabis.

As a result, both the driver and passenger were arrested.

Facing the following charges is 22-year-old Rafael Deleon of Mississauga:

  • Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to a Prohibition Order
  • Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime under $5000
  • Careless Storage of a Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Being an Occupant of acMotor Vehicle Knowing there was a Firearm
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance
  • Trafficking of a Schedule I Substance
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Driving a Motor Vehicle without a Licence

Also arrested was 28-year-old Heather Smith from Atikokan, Ontario.

She is charged with:

  • Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime under $5000
  • Careless Storage of a Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Weapon
  • Being an occupant of a Motor Vehicle Knowing there was a Firearm
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance
  • Traffic in Schedule I Substance
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Permit Unlicensed Person to Drive

Both Deleon and Smith are being held in custody pending a bail hearing Thursday in North Bay court.
